Workshop "Education, Migration, and Big Data: Experience and Research Prospects"

From October 2 to 6, 2024, the workshop "Education, Migration, and Big Data: Experience and Research Prospects" was held as part of the VI International Educational Forum "Altai-Asia 2024." The event brought together the efforts of the Institute of Education at the National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE) and Altai State University and was organized within the framework of the "Mirror Laboratories" project of HSE.

The workshop featured four sessions with invited experts, each dedicated to the specifics of using big data to study educational migration.

1. Workshop "Basics of Web Scraping for Analyzing Digital Traces of Educational Migrants" was led by Lika Vladimirovna Kapustina, a researcher at the International Laboratory of Applied Network Analysis at HSE. Participants learned data scraping from the social network VKontakte using Python and explored the capabilities of the VKontakte API.

2. Workshop "Processing and Analyzing Digital Traces of Educational Migrants," also led by Lika Kapustina, focused on methods for scraping HTML pages and the possibilities of web resources in the context of analyzing migration processes.

3. Workshop "Migration Data in the Space of Network Communications" was conducted by Anna Mikhailovna Semenova, a researcher at the International Laboratory of Applied Network Analysis at HSE, and was dedicated to studying migration processes through the lens of network interaction.

4. Educational Studio "Collection, Storage, and Processing of Big Data for Researching Educational Migrations," conducted by Alexander Sergeevich Suleikin, General Director of "Duke Technologies" and a researcher at the Scientific and Educational Laboratory of Process-Oriented Information Systems at HSE, provided participants with practical experience in working with virtual machines and methods for storing big data.

Additionally, the workshop included a meeting with Vyacheslav Leonidovich Goiko, Director of the Center for Applied Big Data Analysis at Tomsk State University, and Evgeny Alexandrovich Lokhmatov, Head of Regional Relations at the Department of Strategic Projects at VK.

The "Education, Migration, and Big Data" workshop served as a platform for active experience exchange and mastering advanced technologies in the field of educational migration analysis, strengthening scientific collaboration between leading universities in Russia.
